The Merchants of Cool

At HubsTV we’re not really nostalgic types. But as massive fans of both Frontline and music videos, we were really interested to discover the 2000 PBS documentary The Merchants of Cool, which chronicles the creators and sellers of popular culture and those who transformed teenagers into the hottest consumer demographic in the world.

Of particular interest is the exploration of MTV and its research campaigns taking us inside the machinations of the channel and its now defunct TRL brand.

A lot has changes in the last nine years. Back then Limp Bizkit were dominating TRL, Dawson’s Creek was a television phenomenon, and Cruel Intentions had everyone hot and bothered.
